Wood Column Install instructions

WARNINGS:
  • Be sure to obey all safety rules and recommendations set forth by tool manufacturers.
  • Always follow any, and all, local, state, and federal building codes.
  • Always comply with clearances set forth by the manufacturer of stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, and any other heat source.
  • Wear safety glasses during the entire installation process.
24 Hours Before Starting
Ensure post is structurally sound and in good condition.

Acclimate materials by storing them flat in the installation location (but away from moisture and direct sunlight or other heat sources) for at least 24 hours.

Inspect and dry fit column pieces. Note interior markings that indicate intended orientation.

Column Installation

Install Structural Post

Step 1

Install Structural Post

Start with a secure 4x4 or 6x6 structural post that matches the height of the column.

Tools:

  • Tape Measure
  • Hand Saw

Using a wood cutting saw with a finish blade, trim the column to the desired height.

WARNING: Our products have screws embedded below the surface. We recommend using a hand saw (not power tools) when cutting these products. You may find these screws with a stud finder. Barron Designs is not responsible for any bodily harm or damage to your equipment.

Attach the Column to the Structural Post

Tools:

  • Screw Gun/Drill Driver & Bits
  • Exterior Screws
  1. Gently remove the interior wood blocking that served as support through the shipping process. This may require removing toe screws from the wood blocks.
  2. Slide the column around the structural post.
  3. Secure the column to the post using exterior grade screws.
TIP: It is best to add the screws where they will be covered by the base or crown moulding.

Attach the 4th Side of the Column

Tools:

  • Weather Resistant Wood Adhesive
  • Finish Nails
  • Hammer
  • Nail Punch/Setter
Attach the 4th side of the column by applying a bead of adhesive along the mitered edge and pressing it firmly against the portion of the column that was secured in Step 2. Add finish nails along the seams.

Add Crown and/or Base Moulding (Optional)

If you purchased crown and or base moulding install using adhesive and finish nails.

Touch-up as Needed

Touch-up as Needed

Tools:

  • Wood Filler
  • Clean Cloth
  • Small Paint Brush
  1. Using a clean cloth remove any excess adhesive before it dries.
  2. Conceal any screw/nail heads using wood filler & touch up paint.
